ARTIST * ZUMAIA * FRANCE
ZUMAIA is a french solo project, a mix of dark ambient, experimental and electro-industrial music inspired by declining western industrial society, Asian spirituality and animist rituals.
After leaving his first band in 1988 ( new wave / gothic ) he joined an industrial rock band in the early 90's and disappeared for over 20 years.
The first tracks composed by ZUMAIA were recorded in 1989.
What is your inspirational source ?
I am inspired by my environment, my mood / my state of mind can change the way i create music !
I am influenced by 70's/80's electronic and industrial music of course. Bands like Throbbing Gristle,
Test Dept , Residents, Neubauten etc...., but also The Cure, DIJ, C93,DAF, and many many others !
Litterature is also very important for me and my musical work, i made 2 tracks with the words of
Bukowski, a great american peot, and i hope i can work on Baudelaire, Rimbaud or even
Houellebecq poetry soon.
How is your creative process when creating a sound piece ?
When i start working on a new track, i trust and follow my intuition & chance.
I just make music very simply, with my own perception.
Some musicians tend to intellectualize their work, i refuse to do that !
I don't have much musical instrument or computer equipment and i don't need it, i often use a
Tascam digital recorder and create loops.
I try and experiment urban atmosphere sounds, metallic sounds.
How do you see future sound technologies and how will they affect your music ?
There is NO FUTURE !
Some people prefer Analog synthesizers than Digital synthesizers. Which one do you prefer and why ?
I like both ! I only got Korg minilogue & an old Roland jx 305 / i'm looking for a Nord Lead 2x but
it's not easy to find and expensive !
Analog is a fashion phenomenon, and i don't really like fashion. I am not a good technician, i am
always surpassed and have to deal with that !
I often admire younger generations, totally uninhibited and creative.
How do people react when they listen to your music ?
I don't really know !
I have no feedback...I don't play live, so i can't meet people interested in my music.
Sometimes i am very touched and encouraged by people who contact me ( by email, facebook,
soundcloud ) or radio shows, artists for collaborations...

What are your future sound projects ?
I would like to experiment more acoustic sounds and voices, maybe my own voice ! I used my
voice only one time, a long time ago !
I'm working on new album, 2 albums are done but i don't really know what i can do with it, i shared
some tracks to certain labels but no feedback !
It's not easy for me to find a label, so maybe i will have to create my own label.....
